Staying Put: Making a Home in a Restless World by Scott Sanders
"My life, or any life, is a knot where an infinite number of threads lace together. Tease out one of those threads, trace it as far as you can, and eventually you come up against the unknown, where even the experts fall silent. If we gaze about us and see nothing but a tangle, we have not looked hard enough, we have not looked beyond our own deeds and needs to the order that sustains us. We may appeal to the headlines, or cite a disaster fallen on someone we love, and proclaim that the world makes no sense. Yet how could we be troubled by cancer, by hurricanes, by war, by all the messy ways in which things fall apart, if things did not cohere so amazingly to begin with? Of course we seek patterns, but the universe answers our seeking. What we call constellations are human shapes imposed on the stars, with names and legends attached; yet we did not invent the stars, nor their motions, nor their light. The question is not whether there is an order to the world, but what sort of order it is, whence it comes, how to speak of it, and how to live in relation to it."
